Emma Dyason, Drop the top

Untitled, 2015

Gender inequality is a contentious point in today's world, and many find it shocking that this can still exist in Western societies which do not always notice it is there.

This project ('Drop the Top') was therefore designed to created awareness of these inequalities, forcing people to face the issues that are rife within society.

Part of this was collaborative; involving the creation of a Facebook, Instagram and Twitter page. These were based around the 'Free the Nipple' campaign, focusing on the double standards of what is acceptable for men and women, and this concept led to the formation of our own project 'Drop the Top'.

Work was also carried out individually as part of this, and the final piece I produced was a wax candle in the shape of the 'ideal' womens body. I took many moulds of both male and female bodies to demonstrate the diversity present in life, and to encourage people to challenge the idea of what is 'perfect'.

The candle was wax, which is malleable and was then lit. The melting of the wax 'perfect' woman's figure represented unrealistic expectations of the female form burning away, leaving behind the idea that no-one is perfect.
